Volvo V60

Since 2018, Volvo has used a fully digital display for the car dashboard in its V60 models.

Of course, a fully digital display in the dashboard gives a sense of better quality and makes the car look more modern. It also adds to the price of the car or reduces the profit for Volvo.

This dashboard redesign focuses on fully using the space that the display offers to the driver. Filling it with new information that would help the driver, while keeping the important information of a dashboard in focus and easy to be seen.

Where did the idea come from?

My friend and I went to an event together with his Volvo V60.

On the way, he wanted to buy something from a minimarket, however, there was nowhere to park so he left the car in an alleyway. He asked me to sit in the driver seat and left me the keys in case someone came past and could not pass the car, due to a lack of space.

While I was alone in the car I played with the infotainment system, the dashboard caught my attention, it had a fully digital display. I didn't notice this until I looked closely because it looked identical to a normal dashboard. When my friend came back, I asked him what he thought about the dashboard screen and he said it was "ok". This made me want to redesign the dashboard and bring out other amazing features that could inevitably help the drive.

Main finding: The Dashboard can give information to the driver 50% faster then the infotainment system because of smaller eye travel.

Competitors Analysis

I looked at how the other automotive companies utilise the space of the dashboard in their cars and what are the best practices in the industry.

Defining the space

In order to define the space in the best way, I looked for some concepts online and other automakers to see how they display the information on the dashboard.

After getting a sense of how the information is displayed on a dashboard I started to do some sketches to define the space and where I should put the information that should be all the time on the screen, things like Speedometer, Tachometer, Coolant, and Fuel.

Current dashboard analysis

I analyze the current dashboard by looking at the space of the screen that is being used and we can see that 20% of the screen ( Red ) isn’t used at all and it can’t be used because that is the space left between the round dials and the shape of the screen. 

The yellow area takes 30% of the screen and it is used sometimes to show the map, errors, the car model, etc.. What is more concerning about the yellow area is the shape that it has because it could make some elements like the map look a bit squashed by the round dials.

It seems like the round dials create the inefficiency of the space and made me wonder how can I display this information In a more space-efficient way.

User Interviews

I conducted a few In-Person Interviews to find out from different types of drivers, what they are doing while driving, what they think is important while driving and what kind of futures they would like to see on a dashboard.

10 out of 10 people that I interviewed said that they always listening to the music of they find themselves changing tunes while driving.

8 out of 10 people said that they use the map especially when they are driving out of town and having the map in a place where is easy to see would be helpful.

6 out of 10 drivers said that they would like to know information about the car on the dashboard.

5 out of 10 said that they always adjusting the AC temperature and the fan's speed.

1 out of 10 complains about having struggle adjusting the seat.

Interviews

To find the best usage for 70% of the screen left. I decided to conduct some In-Person Interviews to find out from different types of drivers what they are doing while driving, what they think is important while driving and what kind of futures they would like to see on a dashboard.

GOAL

The driver can easily visualise and control the features of the car
while having the important driving information in focus.

Information Architecture

I divided the dashboard in two sections.

- Always on display: The information that the driver needs in order to drive and must be all the time in focus.
- Interchangeable features: The features that the driver can interchange depending on his or her needs.

Redesign

Now I can fit the redesigned elements on the top and bottom edge of the screen which take just 30% of the display and 70% (Green) of the screen can be used to display different tools to help the driver while driving or to control different futures of the car.

With the knowledge I gathered for the competitive analysis about how the other automakers display their informations and what it is important to be in front of the driver. I started to create sketches and wireframes to better define the space and where I should place the important informations that must be all the time in front of the driver.

Volvo V60 isn’t a sports car and most of the models have automatic transmissions, because of those I reduced its size but I made sure that it is still visible for the user.

Fuel & Coolant

I made the fuel and coolant with a line that fills because this seems to be the most space-efficient way to display them.

With the finding that I got from the interviews, I started to make different widgets that are supposed to help the driver control certain functions of the car and also to provide information that can help the driver to give him a better experience.

The widgets are controlled by the buttons on the steering wheel, located on either side.

Car Information & Gears

Today cars are full of sensors and systems that are meant to help the driver to avoid accidents and make the driving experience much easier and what a better way to show the driver what the car sees than a 3D model of the car.

The view of the 3D Model of the car changes with the gear, when the car is in the park (P) it will show you if there are any errors, the tire pressure, If it has any door open, seatbelt, etc.

When the car is on Drive (D) the view changes from behind the car and becomes the drive assistance, where you will see the speed limit, the distance from the car in front and cruise control, etc.
